The Lavender Line
Our very own 0-4-0 diesel ‘Planet’ has been undergoing a full cosmetic overhaul over the past 6 months by one of our Wednesday gang members.
At one point ‘Planet’ was one of the only working locomotives at Isfield when we went through a steaming crisis in 2003. Our own steam locomotive ‘Blackie’ had failed due to a crack in the outer firebox and ‘Austin 1’ who was on long term hire had failed with a number of cracked flue tubes, this left the railway in dilemma enabling our only resident diesel locomotive ‘Planet’ to take charge of passenger duties for a number of weeks until Austin was able to return.
Ever since then ‘Planet’ has received a number of different paint schemes over the years from yellow with wasp strip buffer beams to bright blue with red beams. She now carries a brand new midnight black livery with a cream cab interior, this colour really complements what a humble looking loco ‘Planet’ is and the much deserved attention she is finally receiving.
Since the arrival ‘Valiant’ in 2008 ‘Planet’ has been retired to shunting duties only, although there are future plans to run her with the toad brake van on platform 1 during peak days allowing passengers to enjoy parallel departures with the main service train on platform 2.
