Worth halt undergoes gauging tests

On Saturday 10th March the permanent way gang took the opportunity to carry out a series of gauging exams on the railway new station, ‘Worth halt’ is in the final stages of construction and one of the crucial tests was to find out how well the locomotives and rolling stock fit into the platform. This was carried out in-between one of Clive Groomes footplate courses allowing the opportunity to see the steam engine waiting at ‘Worth halt’.

Our resident Hampshire unit ‘Thumper’ 1133 also made its first trip to ‘Worth halt’ for gauging exams and she too passed with flying colours, this is another reason why it was agreed to build the new halt as every time the thumper unit was used for passenger services the driver has to climb out the cab and walk along the track to the other end of the train, with the new station this means he simply just has to walk along the platform. 1133 has been under going a very extensive overhaul over the past 7 years where one of our very dedicated volunteers has spent countless hours bringing 1133 back to her former glory.

Our thumper will be making her first official public appearance at our diesel gala on 7th and 8th July where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of a thumper unit travelling through the Sussex countryside. At the gala she will be joined by resident diesels Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 and Ruston ‘Valiant’ 0-6-0. This is the first diesel gala held at the Lavender line for over 9 years and its turning out to be a very exciting event! More details to follow on the diesel gala.

Why not see how ‘Worth halt’ is coming along, although the station is not yet open to the public you can see from the train how the halt is looking and what work there is to be done. We will be running our mothers day steam hauled special on Sunday 18th March where all mums go free and we will also be operating the first of our goods trains days on Sunday 25th March whereby both dates will be steam hauled by our resident steam engine ‘Austin 1’.

Keep an eye out for more information coming soon about the lavender line diesel gala on 7th and 8th July.
