Steam and Thumper Day This Coming Bank Holiday Monday!

This Bank holiday Monday see’s a very unique event taking place at the Lavender line; our very own thumper unit 1133 will be teaming up with our resident steam engine Austin 1 to bring you a day of steam and thumpers with an intensive timetable which will allow you to enjoy both the luxuries of steam and diesel.

Former Connex DEMU thumper unit 1133 is currently in the final stages of restoration as almost 8 years of hard work has final paid off. Our thumper caretaker and working member Chris Chamberlin has spearheaded the project ever since the thumper arrived at Isfield in late 2004, since then she has under gone a full cosmetic overhaul which has included a full strip back from top to bottom, new batteries, a complete clean out and of course coats of Southern green paint to recreate what the popular thumper would have looked fresh from the works.

Monday 27th August will see thumper 1133 sharing the train services with our resident steam engine Austin 1 with train running every half an hour. The plan is to run Austin 1 from platform 1 with her service train and the thumper will run out from platform 2. This is a rare event to see a two train service running at the Lavender line which is why it’s the perfect opportunity to visit the railway and take advantage of our all day rover tickets which include unlimited trains rides to and from our newly opened station Worth halt, normal ticket prices apply for this event.

The station will be open from 8.30 onwards with the first train departing Isfield at 10.30 with train running on the hour and half hour, last train will depart at 4.30.

Why not take advantage of the good weather that’s set for the Bank holiday weekend and take a trip to the Lavender line, take a trip on either the thumper or steam train and enjoy a leisurely stroll through Worth woods after alighting at our new station Worth halt. With shunting movements taken place in the morning this could also prove to be a perfect opperunity to take some beautiful photographs of both the thumper and Austin 1 as they make their way to the station. You can also get off at Worth halt and make your way down to the marked footpath where for quarter of a mile you can take some unique shots of the trains.

There will also be a normal steam service on Sunday 26th August where Austin 1 will be taking charge of the train and will be offering steam train rides throughout the day from platform 2. As always the station will be open from 8.30 onwards for our famous full English breakfasts.
