The Lavender Line
Our resident steam engine 0-6-0ST Kitson Austin 1 has passed her annual steam and boiler exam which took place on Tuesday 26th February. This is Austin 1’s second annual boiler exam since she had her 10 year overhaul at the Llangollen railway in 2007.
The annual boiler and steam exam is very much like an MOT on a car, it lasts between 12-14 months and has to carried out by a qualified boiler examiner who tests the locomotive when both cold and when the engine is in full steam. The cold exam looks for any corrosion or damage around the water jacket of the firebox and boiler whilst the steam test examines the safety valves and any underlining problems that may occur with the firebox and boiler when in steam. Austin 1 passed both exams with flying colours with only minor problems which have now been rectified.
Austin 1 is now fit for traffic and will soon be carrying out her steam duties for the railway over the next year. Austin’s first public outing this year for public trains will be on the Easter weekend where she will take charge of passenger services on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. There will be a diesel service on Good Friday with no services on Easter Saturday.
Steam dates for the rest of 2013 will be carried out by Austin 1 on the first and last Sundays of every month from Easter until October except for the weekend of 6th and 7th July where out diesels take to the stage for our annual diesel gala.
Austin 1 will also be starring alongside the ‘Port of Par’ twins Alfred and Judy over the weekend of 5th and 6th October for our steam and vintage transport gala which will include a three train service with an intensive timetable along with visiting vintage vehicles, for more information on this even check out our special events page and keep an eye out for our up dates on both the steam and vintage transport gala and diesel gala.
